Locals Furious After Islamic Banner is Draped Over 9/11 Memorial in California Cemetery

A banner promoting a new Muslim section of a cemetery in California was placed over a 9/11 memorial, sparking anger among local residents.

The Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Concord, California, allowed the banner to be installed, but the cemetery’s owner said he did not realize it would cover the memorial itself. Once he became aware of the placement, he ordered the banner removed, which occurred shortly before noon.

The cemetery owner explained that a portion of the property had recently been sold to a Muslim family intending to establish a memorial garden. He confirmed that he had authorized signage for the new section but emphasized that covering the 9/11 memorial was never approved.

Residents expressed strong disapproval over the placement of the banner. Danny Kimmel, whose mother is buried at the cemetery, described the scene as shocking. “It felt like a punch to the gut,” he said, noting the memorial’s significance and the family’s history. The Kimmels are a blue star family, and Danny’s older brother was killed in Vietnam. He added that his mother would have been horrified to see the banner over the memorial.

The incident has raised questions about how such a mistake could occur. Many people stressed the importance of remembering the tragedy of 9/11 and ensuring that memorials remain respected and undisturbed.
