Loose Lips Sink Longtime Friendship

DEAR ABBY:
My boyfriend, “Wade,” and I were thrilled to be expecting our first child and were excited to share the news with our family and close friends. Unfortunately, Wade isn’t great at keeping secrets. Before we had the chance to tell our parents, he shared the news with his best friend and the friend’s wife, asking them to keep it private since we hadn’t yet reached the 12-week mark.

About a month later, I discovered that they had told Wade’s ex-girlfriend about the pregnancy. I was extremely upset. It wasn’t their news to share-especially with Wade’s ex. It bothered me that she found out I was pregnant before my own parents did.

When Wade confronted them, they denied telling her and claimed she already knew. However, my sister-in-law later told me that the ex had contacted her asking if we were expecting, saying the best friend’s wife had told her. I felt completely betrayed. Wade decided to cut ties with them and uninvited them from our gender reveal and baby shower. They responded by unfriending us on social media.

Over time, though, the situation kept weighing on me. I realized that Wade’s ex would probably have found out eventually anyway. Wanting to make peace, I reached out to the couple and asked if we could meet to clear up any misunderstandings. I told them their friendship meant a lot to us. They never responded. I left it alone after that, and it has now been six months.

Looking back, I can’t help but wonder if I overreacted and ruined a friendship because of pregnancy hormones. Did I go too far?
