The man from Nazareth founded a movement that stood in direct contrast to the idea that power and force determine what is right. His teaching did not claim that the strongest would rule the earth. Instead, he taught that the meek would inherit it. Rather than praising ruthlessness, he humbled himself by washing the feet of those who had little status or authority. And while many argue that evil can only be defeated by greater force, he told his followers not to retaliate against wrongdoing and urged them to love their enemies and pray for those who persecute them.
His life itself challenged the belief that victory belongs only to those with the greatest strength. When the Roman Empire—an immense and efficient power—crucified him, Christians believe the resurrection demonstrated a different truth: that goodness ultimately prevails not through weapons or armies, but through truth, sacrifice, and love.
The Gospels also show that he spoke sharply against anyone who harms the innocent. In one warning recorded in Matthew 18:6, he said that anyone who leads a child astray would be better off with a millstone tied around their neck and thrown into the sea.
Children held a special place in his ministry. When his own disciples tried to keep them away, he welcomed them instead and said that people must become like children to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The idea of a leader being responsible for the deaths of vast numbers of children would have drawn fierce condemnation from the one who declared, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them.”
Supporters of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu argue that such ideals are unrealistic. They contend that the world is dangerous, that Hamas is a brutal enemy, and that weakness can invite destruction. They say nations must be strong enough to defend themselves.
Yet the message attributed to Jesus did not ignore danger or evil. He lived under Roman rule, confronted corruption among religious authorities, endured betrayal, and ultimately faced execution. His response was not to pursue domination through violence. Instead, he taught that evil should be overcome with good, and that no goal justifies the deaths of innocent children.
