A woman from Pennsylvania has been charged after an incident involving her young child at a Walmart store over the weekend that reportedly left the boy unconscious.

Authorities say Samantha Fletcher faces several charges, including aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of children, recklessly endangering another person, and simple assault.

Police in Tullytown Borough said officers were called on March 14 to conduct a welfare check at a Walmart on Levittown Parkway after someone reported concerns about a child inside the store. When officers arrived, they spoke with a shopper who described troubling behavior by a woman with two young children.

According to police, the witness said the woman appeared intoxicated and was yelling profanities at the children. The witness also reported seeing her drag one of the children across the floor by a backpack leash while the child cried uncontrollably. The woman allegedly lifted the child and dropped him into a shopping cart, causing the boy to hit his head. The witness said the child later lost consciousness.

Officers later located Fletcher still inside the store. Police reported that she was holding the unconscious child when they found her. Emergency responders evaluated the boy at the scene and determined he needed immediate medical treatment.

Investigators concluded that Fletcher was responsible for the injuries the child suffered. She was taken into custody and later appeared before Magisterial District Judge Terrence P. Hughes. The judge ordered that she be held at the Bucks County Correctional Facility on $10,000 bail.

Court records provided further details about what investigators believe happened. A shopper who approached Fletcher had offered to help calm the crying child. Fletcher allegedly told the woman she could try. The witness picked up the child, and the boy briefly settled down, resting his head on her shoulder.

Police say the situation escalated after that. Investigators allege Fletcher began handling the child aggressively and repeatedly forced him in and out of the shopping cart several times. During one of those moments, the child struck his head on the cart and soon became unconscious.

When officers arrived, they found the boy unresponsive in Fletcher’s arms. Another child was reportedly asleep in the shopping cart. According to the affidavit, medics could not wake the boy and observed a large bruise on his forehead.

The child was taken by ambulance to St. Mary Medical Center, where doctors performed a CT scan that reportedly showed he had suffered a serious concussion.

Child protective services were notified about the incident, and the children were later released into the care of their father.

Fletcher is scheduled to return to court for arraignment on April 24.
