A man arrested for trespassing attempted to post a $250 bail using counterfeit cash, offering four fake $100 bills to the judge and joking that he could “keep the change,” according to South Carolina authorities. Chesterfield County Magistrate John Davis quickly noticed that the bills looked suspicious. Upon closer inspection, he saw Chinese characters printed on the back, according to the Smoking Gun.

A detention officer then tested the bills with a counterfeit-detection pen, confirming they were fraudulent, police said, as reported by WSB. Alexander, who had been taken into custody on Saturday, was subsequently charged with felony forgery and misdemeanor contempt of court. His bond was increased to over $6,000, and he remained in jail as of Tuesday, WYFF reported.

Initially, police thought Alexander had presented three $100 bills, but when the bills were logged into evidence, investigators counted four, according to the Smoking Gun.
