Trump Asks China to Postpone His Trip
President Trump announced Monday that he plans to postpone his upcoming trip to Beijing, where he was scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said, “We’ve got a war going on. I think it’s important that I be here.”
Earlier, on Sunday, the president indicated that he might reconsider the visit if China did not commit ships to help protect shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, where Iranian actions have nearly blocked passage. However, on Monday he clarified that the delay was not tied to that issue. “We’ve requested that we delay it a month or so,” Trump said. “I’m looking forward to being with him.”
Trump has also expressed frustration with European and Asian countries for either refusing or failing to respond to his request to assist in escorting commercial vessels through the strategic waterway. On Sunday, he warned that contributions after his China trip would be too late. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized Monday that the postponement is unrelated to disagreements over intervening in the strait. The region is a critical source of oil for China, accounting for about half of the country’s imports, according to NBC News.
