A 43-year-old man allegedly broke into a Portland home on Sunday while a mother was inside with her two young children, police say. The suspect, identified as Judson Defir, reportedly entered the residence while the mother was holding her 10-month-old baby and playing with her 3-year-old. Her husband was outside working in the yard at the time.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, Defir greeted the mother with the words, “Honey, I’m here,” before grabbing her and pulling her into a guest bedroom. There, the affidavit alleges, he forced her onto the bed, pressing on her back and hips in an attempted sexual assault. The mother held the baby in her arms during the attack, and the pressure on her back caused her to press on the child.

The mother reportedly pleaded with Defir to allow her to place the infant safely in the crib. He allegedly relented, and she moved the baby to another room before returning to her 3-year-old and barricading the bedroom door with a bookshelf in an effort to keep Defir out. The affidavit says he tried to force his way into the room.

At that point, the mother went out onto the balcony and called for help, alerting her husband. She told police she had initially mistaken the intruder’s voice for her husband’s as he came up the stairs. She described Defir as having messy hair, a scruffy beard, and “messed up teeth,” wearing a black hoodie and dark pants, and smelling strongly of body odor.

Neighbors and church members rushed to assist, but by the time they arrived, Defir had fled the house. Portland police arrived shortly after and found the mother “sobbing uncontrollably,” repeatedly telling officers that Defir “tried to rape her.”

Police canvassed the area and located Defir being followed by roughly 15 people who were shouting at him. He was arrested on the scene. The affidavit notes that Defir made inappropriate comments to a female officer during his arrest.

Authorities said this was not an isolated incident. Earlier that same day, Defir allegedly assaulted three other women, including one inside a nearby church and two others on the street. Police reported that minutes before the home attack, he entered the church and touched a woman inappropriately before fleeing.

In interviews with police, Defir admitted to using methamphetamine earlier that morning and said he went to church and ate pancakes before entering the Portland home. He claimed the mother screamed, causing her to drop the baby, and said he had considered jumping from the second floor to escape. Defir told police he fled as people began following him, leading to his arrest.

Defir was arraigned Monday on charges including first-degree attempted rape, kidnapping, and burglary, as well as a probation violation for a previous indecent exposure case. Court records show he was previously arrested in 2024 for incidents involving harassment of children in a park and public nudity. He is being held without bail, with a detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
