Woman crushed to death by St. Patrick’s Day Parade float in freak accident
A tragic accident disrupted Louisville’s annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration on Saturday when a woman was fatally struck by a parade float during the event.
The incident occurred during the 53rd St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Louisville, Kentucky, where crowds of spectators — including families with young children and older residents — had gathered along the streets to watch the festivities.
According to local reports, the victim, a woman believed to be in her 50s, was walking next to a parade float that carried hay bales and was being pulled by a gray pickup truck. At some point, her foot became caught on the moving vehicle.
Witnesses said she was pulled underneath the float and was run over moments later.

The truck quickly came to a stop as people nearby rushed in to help. Emergency crews transported the woman to University of Louisville Hospital, but she was later pronounced dead, authorities said.
Further up along the parade route, thousands of attendees were unaware that anything had happened when the procession suddenly slowed and stopped. Stephanie Youstra, a volunteer participating as a parade mascot, told local station WAVE that she had just finished her portion of the parade when the floats behind her abruptly halted. News of the incident gradually spread among participants along the route.
Youstra expressed sympathy for those directly involved.
“My heart goes out to everyone who was on that float and to the family,” she said. “I can’t imagine what they must be going through.”

David Gnamba, who was helping operate his family’s food truck near the parade, saw emergency responders place the woman on a stretcher. At first, he did not realize the situation was so serious.
“It breaks my heart because someone lost their life,” he said. “This is not the kind of news anyone wants to hear — not as people, vendors, or those who came out to celebrate.”
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg urged the community to keep the victim’s loved ones in their thoughts.

“Please keep her family and friends in your prayers,” he wrote on social media, adding that he hopes her memory will be a blessing.
The traffic unit of the Louisville Metro Police Department has opened an investigation into the accident.
