A man who was shot and killed by Dallas police earlier this week had close ties to law enforcement in North Texas and had worked as part of the security team for U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett, according to sources who spoke with CBS News Texas.

Authorities have identified the man as 39-year-old Diamon-Mazairre Robinson. Investigators say Robinson was publicly operating under the name “Mike King” and had used multiple aliases while running a business that arranged off-duty security jobs for police officers.

Police say Robinson died Wednesday night after a standoff with Dallas SWAT officers. According to investigators, he fled into a hospital parking garage and barricaded himself inside a vehicle. Officers deployed tear gas to force him out, and police say he pulled a gun on them before he was shot.

Sources told CBS News Texas that Robinson was also the focus of a federal investigation and was wanted on allegations that he had impersonated a law enforcement officer.

Records reviewed by CBS News Texas show Robinson had a lengthy criminal history. Between 2009 and 2012, he was arrested seven times on theft charges in Dallas, Duncanville, Irving, Dallas County and by the Texas Department of Public Safety. The cases included both misdemeanor and felony charges.

Court records indicate Robinson pleaded guilty in those cases. His penalties consisted of fines of up to $2,500 and probation sentences ranging from one to five years, with one probation term lasting ten years.

Despite that background, sources say Robinson managed to reinvent himself under the name Mike King. Under that identity, he became known as a security figure around Rep. Crockett, both while she served in office and during her recent campaign for the U.S. Senate. Sources also said he operated a company called Off Duty Police Services, which arranged extra-duty security work for law enforcement officers across North Texas.

Several officers who spoke with CBS News Texas said Robinson introduced himself to them as a detective with U.S. Capitol Police. That claim may have helped trigger the federal investigation that eventually led authorities to search for him this week.

Photos obtained by CBS News Texas show Robinson standing near Crockett at public events and on the campaign trail during her Senate campaign. Sources said he also coordinated teams of security officers at several hotels in downtown Dallas and at his church.

Law enforcement sources said Robinson drove a vehicle designed to resemble an undercover police car and used license plates that had reportedly been stolen from vehicles outside a military recruiting station. Investigators also say Robinson was advertising security jobs for the upcoming FIFA World Cup matches scheduled to be held in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, offering pay of $90 an hour through his placement service.

His criminal history has raised questions about how he was able to organize off-duty jobs for police officers and obtain a security role connected to a sitting member of Congress.

Documents obtained by CBS News Texas show that a person using the name Mike King received payments for “security services” from Crockett as recently as last year. One of those payments was for $340, though it is unclear how he was originally hired or how much he earned overall while working as a security officer for her.

Crockett’s office told CBS News Texas that staff members are waiting for more information before responding to questions about Robinson. The Dallas Police Department has also declined to comment further at this time.

CBS News Texas said it also reached out to U.S. Capitol Police to ask whether Robinson had ever undergone a background check connected to his claims of working with the agency, but the organization has not responded.
