North Korea fired approximately ten ballistic missiles on Saturday, heightening tensions on the Korean Peninsula while the United States and South Korea were conducting joint military exercises intended to discourage this type of military action from the communist regime.

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the launches took place around 1:20 p.m. local time from the Sunan region near Pyongyang. The missiles traveled about 350 kilometers before landing in waters off North Korea’s eastern coastline.

Officials in Japan reported that none of the missiles landed within Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

Recent statements from Pyongyang have further strained relations, as the regime dismissed recent peace outreach from Seoul as a “clumsy, deceptive farce.” South Korea’s military said it detected roughly ten ballistic missiles heading toward the East Sea, the term South Korea uses for the body of water commonly known as the Sea of Japan.

Military authorities in South Korea and the United States are currently analyzing the missiles to determine their exact capabilities and specifications. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the country’s military remains fully prepared to respond decisively to any further provocation.

Japan’s defense ministry also confirmed the launches, noting that the missiles reached an altitude of around 80 kilometers before falling into waters near the Korean Peninsula’s eastern side, outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

Some analysts believe the timing may be intentional. Hong Sung-pyo, a senior researcher at the Korea Institute for Military Affairs, said global attention is largely focused on the conflict in the Middle East, and North Korea has often carried out military actions during times when it wants to bring attention back to itself.

The launches occurred during the annual Freedom Shield exercises between U.S. and South Korean forces, which both governments describe as defensive training designed to maintain military readiness.

The North Korean government criticized the drills, portraying the joint defensive exercises as a provocation, even as the regime continues to test missiles and violate United Nations sanctions while threatening neighboring countries.
