President Donald Trump said Friday that he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin may be providing some assistance to Iran as it fights against the United States and Israel.

Trump made the remarks during a radio interview with Fox News host Brian Kilmeade. His comments came about a week after he criticized Fox News reporter Peter Doocy at the White House for questioning him about reports suggesting Russia was helping Iran.

During the interview, Kilmeade asked Trump directly whether he thought Putin was aiding Iran.

Trump responded that it was possible. He said he believed Putin might be offering some level of help. Trump also noted that Russia likely views the situation in a similar way regarding the United States’ support for Ukraine.

According to Trump, Russia may see U.S. backing of Ukraine in the same light that Washington views any Russian support for Iran. Ukraine has been fighting Russia since Moscow launched its invasion in early 2022, and the United States has been assisting Ukraine in that conflict.

Trump added that China could make similar claims, suggesting that countries often accuse one another of supporting opposing sides in global conflicts.

Earlier in the week, Trump held a phone call with Putin.

Following that conversation, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff said in a CNBC interview on Tuesday that Russian officials told the United States they were not providing intelligence to Iran. Witkoff said the U.S. could take that statement at face value for now, while expressing hope that Russia is indeed not sharing such information.
