Fox is expanding the world of Family Guy by giving one of its most recognizable characters a show of his own. The network has approved a new animated series centered on Stewie Griffin, with two seasons planned for the 2027–28 television season. The program will be called Stewie and will air on Fox before becoming available on Hulu the following day, according to confirmation provided to USA Today.
The story begins after Stewie is expelled from his previous preschool. He ends up enrolled in a low-budget classroom filled with unfamiliar students and an elderly turtle, about 75 years old, who has strong opinions about nearly everything.
According to the show’s description, Stewie and his classmates start out unhappy with their situation, and even the turtle shares their gloomy mood. That changes once Stewie starts using the strange gadgets and inventions he’s known for. With those devices, he sends the class traveling through space and time, transforming dull school days into bizarre and unpredictable adventures.
Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane will continue providing the voice for Stewie and will also serve as an executive producer on the series. In a statement, MacFarlane joked that he appreciated Fox for the opportunity and looked forward to “pretending” he was closely collaborating with the network on the project.
Sources speaking to Deadline say the new series exists separately from the main Family Guy storyline. While characters from the long-running show, now in its 24th season, could appear from time to time, the events in the spinoff will not change the version of Stewie seen in the original series.
When Family Guy first premiered in 1999, Stewie was mainly portrayed as a villainous toddler focused on killing his mother, Lois, and taking over the world. Over the years, the character shifted in tone. His friendship with Brian, the family’s talking dog, became a major part of the show, and his scientific experiments grew more elaborate, including devices capable of traveling across multiple universes.
The new program will be the second spinoff connected to Family Guy. The first was The Cleveland Show, which ran from 2009 until 2013. It also adds to Seth MacFarlane’s broader animation lineup, which includes American Dad!, currently in its 24th season, and a planned animated project based on Ted.
