Kelly Clarkson says ‘American Idol’ producers ‘lied’ about $1M prize
Kelly Clarkson has criticized American Idol, claiming the show failed to deliver on promises made to her during her early career.
On Tuesday’s episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the 43-year-old singer and talk show host—who won the competition’s inaugural season in 2002—revealed she never received the $1 million prize she was promised.
Clarkson was joined by actor Daniel Radcliffe and reality star Rob Rausch, who discussed his $220,800 winnings from Season 4 of The Traitors. During the conversation, Clarkson expressed frustration with how prizes are handled, saying that executives “lied” about the rewards. “You probably weren’t alive when I was on American Idol, but I was literally on the show,” she said. “They were like, ‘Oh, you win a million dollars,’ or whatever. No, you didn’t. They lied. It was like a million dollars’ worth of investment in you.”
Radcliffe appeared surprised, responding, “Wait, what?”
Clarkson continued, sharing that she also never received a car that had been promised to her. “I needed it because my car was bashed in, and I couldn’t afford the deductible. And then—no! I did not get a car,” she said. She noted that Clay Aiken, the runner-up in Season 2, received both a car and one for his mother. “I was like, ‘What the—!’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, they gave my mom one.’ I was like, ‘I’m gonna actually kick your a– right now.’”

Radcliffe suggested that early-season winners should be compensated fairly if the value of prizes grows over time. “There should be some system where if you win something on the first season of something, whatever the prize has become, you should retroactively get that,” he said. Clarkson disagreed, stating, “No, it was supposed to be the prize then, OK? It was supposed to be the prize then!”
She added a message for Rausch and others who might be in similar situations: “You might not see it, but you know, I hope you got enough TV time.”
American Idol representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Clarkson has previously spoken about her early experiences on the show. On Kylie Kelce’s podcast Not Gonna Lie, she revealed that she didn’t even realize her auditions were being televised until the third round. “For all of us in that first season, we literally didn’t… I didn’t even know it was a TV show until my third audition,” she said. “We were literally trying to pay our bills. Nobody knew it was gonna amount to anything.”
At 19, Clarkson’s primary concern was making enough money to cover everyday expenses, including her car deductible. After winning the competition, she released her debut album Thankful in 2003, followed by Breakaway, which included major hits such as “Since U Been Gone,” “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” and “Because of You.” Clarkson has gone on to win three Grammy Awards and earned 17 nominations throughout her career.
