When Fido Takes Over the Furniture: A Wife’s Struggle for Sanity

Dear Abby,

I need some guidance about a situation at home that’s driving me a little crazy. My husband allows our dog to sleep in our bed and climb on all the furniture. I absolutely cannot stand it. I find it unsanitary and uncomfortable, especially in our bed. I was raised in a household where pets were never allowed on furniture, so this behavior is completely foreign to me.

Every day, I notice the wear and tear on our couches, the fur everywhere, and the lingering smells that just won’t go away. I’ve tried to express my discomfort, but my husband insists it’s fine and even claims it’s “how he was raised.” I understand that his upbringing is different, but this is affecting my comfort and peace at home.

How do I get him to understand my perspective without causing conflict? Is there a polite way to set boundaries with our dog and make our home a bit more hygienic without starting a war over furniture?

Sincerely,
Frustrated in Florida
