Jarvis Butts looked down as he stood in court on March 12, 2026, during his sentencing hearing, according to Court TV. The hearing was marked by emotional testimony and interruptions as family members and victims addressed the court.

As the first victim impact statement on behalf of Za’Niyah Harris was read, shouting and profanity erupted in the courtroom, with someone yelling “Shut up!” during the statement.

Butts had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with Harris’ death. He also admitted guilt to four counts of second-degree criminal sexual contact and one count of third-degree criminal sexual contact tied to separate cases.

Prosecutors said Harris was 13 years old when Butts impregnated her and later killed her along with the unborn child. At the time charges were first announced, prosecutors said Butts knew she was pregnant and had been searching for ways to terminate the pregnancy. Harris was last seen on January 9, 2024, after stepping off her school bus. Her body has never been located.

During Thursday’s hearing, Harris’ grandmother, Annette Harris, spoke about the impact of the loss.

“It’s been two years and two months since I reported Za’Niyah missing,” she said. She added that she no longer feels safe at home and that both she and other family members have received threats.

As Harris became overwhelmed with emotion while testifying, loud shouting broke out in the courtroom. Judge Nicholas Hathaway ordered two women removed, and yelling could still be heard coming from the hallway afterward.

Several individuals who said they were victims of Butts’ sexual abuse also spoke. One described how the betrayal changed their view of him.

“You were someone I once called dad until you did what you did,” the victim said. “You caused deep harm that I continue to live with. I no longer see you as a father figure or a hero, but as a monster.”

Under a plea agreement reached with prosecutors, Butts received a sentence of 35 to 60 years in prison for the murder of Harris. He was also sentenced to 10 to 15 years for each of the other charges.

Za’Niyah’s aunt, Marketta Harris, told the court she did not believe justice had truly been achieved.

“Justice will never be served,” she said. “You still get to live, still receive healthcare, still breathe without showing any remorse.”

Butts’ sister, Tijuana Butts, also addressed the court and spoke directly about the harm caused by her brother.

“I didn’t plan to come today,” she said. “But I’m here for Na’Ziyah, for my nieces, and for the other victims my brother hurt.” Turning toward him, she added, “You made your bed, now you have to lie in it. Face what you’ve done.”

Judge Hathaway ruled that all of Butts’ sentences will run at the same time. When he is eventually released from prison, he will be required to register as a sex offender.
