A Texas man has been arrested after authorities say he kept his disabled wife confined to a bedroom in their upscale Houston-area home for several years.

James Earl Johnson, 46, was taken into custody last week and faces two felony charges: injury to a disabled person and abandoning or endangering a disabled individual, according to court records.

Prosecutors allege Johnson forced his 46-year-old wife to remain inside a bedroom of their home in southeast Houston for roughly five years. Investigators say she had no access to a phone and very limited contact with anyone outside the home during that time.

The situation came to light on Friday, March 6, when the woman managed to briefly call 911. Authorities say Johnson accidentally left his phone in the room before leaving the house. The woman used it to dial for help, but investigators claim Johnson returned while she was still on the call. According to court documents, he struck her and carried her back to the bed before ending the call with the dispatcher.

Investigators also allege Johnson severely restricted her food and medical care during the confinement. Court documents state that he often left her with extremely small amounts of food, sometimes only a single egg and a small portion of dinner. Police say she was also denied consistent medical treatment during the five-year period.

After the interrupted emergency call, officers went to the home to investigate. The investigation led to Johnson’s arrest.

The woman was transported to a nearby hospital by paramedics and remained there several days later, according to her adult son, who spoke with Houston ABC affiliate KTRK. He did not provide details about her condition or the nature of her disability.

Authorities say the couple lived with their children in a large home in Houston’s Clear Lake area. Court documents indicate one of the children is 6 years old. Property records from the Harris Central Appraisal District show the house was valued at just over $1 million in 2025.

Records suggest the woman may have previously attempted to alert authorities about the abuse. Police were called to the home in November, but when officers arrived, she reportedly said that she and the children had been instructed not to speak with police. Officers left the scene without filing a report, according to KTRK.

Johnson was later released from the Harris County Jail after posting a $50,000 bond. As part of the bond conditions, he is prohibited from contacting his wife, cannot possess firearms, and must wear a GPS monitoring device.

His next court appearance is scheduled for March 18.
