An Illinois mother and her boyfriend are in custody after authorities say they subjected her 11-year-old son to years of abuse, including pouring dish soap into his mouth and forcing him to write sentences like, “you’re not a loved child, everybody hates you.”
Pricilla P. Marshall, 34, and Cody R. Marion, 35, face charges including aggravated battery, child endangerment, and domestic battery, according to the Fox Lake Police Department.
The investigation began Friday morning when a local business owner found the boy, wearing only a diaper and showing signs of physical abuse, in the area of Nippersink Boulevard and Grand Avenue. The child had blood on his face and multiple welts, bruises, and scratches. Police took him to a hospital and later went to the home, where they encountered Marshall. Two younger children, ages 1 and 2, and two older boys who were at school at the time, also live in the home and were unharmed.
Forensic interviews with the children revealed that Marshall and Marion allegedly abused the 11-year-old over an extended period. Police say the pair poured dish soap into the boy’s mouth and ears, struck him with household objects, and prevented him from attending school.
Court documents reviewed by the Lake & McHenry County Scanner indicate that Marshall allegedly used extension cords, metal spatulas, and spoons to hit the boy and sometimes punched him in the face. She reportedly forced him to remove clothing during beatings to increase the pain and threatened to stab him “33 times.” Prosecutors also said she coerced the boy’s older brother into hurting him and required the boy to kneel on uneven floorboards while writing the message, “you’re not a loved child, everybody hates you,” repeatedly.
Additionally, Marshall and Marion allegedly fed the other children fast food while restricting the boy to canned food or ravioli. None of the other children were reportedly harmed.
After interviewing the children, police arrested Marshall and Marion and took them to the Lake County Jail, where they are being held without bond. Marion has a court appearance scheduled for Tuesday.
