Soccer team asks Madonna for its jersey back on X — and she responds with a confusing reply
The iconic shirt worn by Madonna decades ago has become part of the history of a Spanish soccer club — and the team wants it back.
Spanish soccer club Celta Vigo recently reached out to Madonna about the sky-blue jersey she wore more than 30 years ago. The singer responded, but her reply left fans a bit confused.
During her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour, Madonna performed at Celta Vigo’s home stadium, Balaídos Stadium. While on stage, she wore the club’s light-blue jersey with the No. 5, honoring then-defender José Manuel Espinosa.
On Wednesday, club president Marián Mouriño Terrazo posted a message on X asking Madonna if she knew where the historic jersey might be. The club hopes to add the item to its archives.
“Do you have it? If you know where it may be, or if you would like to join us in the search to retrieve it, please contact us via private message,” Terrazo wrote.
She added that the moment has taken on greater meaning over the years.
“Although it was not the only football jersey you wore on stage, that image has come to shine differently over time. We now better understand what you were defending back then — challenging the established order and standing up to those who presume to tell you what you can or cannot do. In the club I preside over, we recognize ourselves in that spirit. That is why we hope to find this garment. This search is not a whim; it is an act of memory and part of the emotional heritage of our club.”

On Saturday, Madonna responded on X, writing: “This shirt is hanging in my archives! I am wearing and representing your team in spirit!!”
Her response sparked reactions from fans, many of whom pointed out that she did not directly address the club’s request to return the jersey.
“So … does that mean you’re giving the shirt back? It’s confusing,” one user wrote.
Another commented: “Classy … but she’s not giving it back!”
Madonna is a seven-time Grammy winner and remains the best-selling female music artist of all time.
