Iranian bombers came within ‘two minutes’ of striking largest US base in Middle East before Qatari air force shot aircraft down
Iranian bombers came within two minutes of striking the largest base housing US troops in the Middle East before the Qatari air force intercepted the aircraft, according to a new report.
The SU-24 planes, operated by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, targeted Al-Udeid Air Base—which hosts around 10,000 US service members—on Monday. They were intercepted by a Qatari F-15 jet along with other military aircraft, CNN reported.
A source told CNN the SU-24s were “carrying bombs and guided munitions.” The planes reportedly flew at an altitude of about 80 feet to avoid detection, prompting Qatar to deploy its air fleet after designating the aircraft as “hostile.” The Iranian planes were shot down over Qatari waters, and a search for the crews was launched.

This marked the first time Qatar’s air force engaged in air-to-air combat.
“Qatari fighters for the first time have shot down two Iranian bombers on route to their location,” said Dan Caine, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff. Qatar also intercepted seven ballistic missiles and five drones fired by Iran.

“The threat was addressed immediately upon detection, in accordance with the operational plan, as all missiles were shot down before reaching their targets,” the Qatari government said.
Iran has not commented on the downing of its planes.
