26-Year-Old Tourist Dies After Falling Off Volcano, Family Says Rescue Teams Didn’t Do Enough To Save Her

The family of a tourist is calling for accountability after alleging that an Indonesian rescue team failed to properly respond following a two-part fall from a 12,000-foot active volcano.

According to People, 26-year-old Brazilian Juliana Marins was hiking Mount Rinjani with a tour group and guide around 6:30 a.m. on June 21 when she accidentally fell from a ledge.

Family Questions Rescue Efforts

On June 25, Marins’ family posted a joint statement in Spanish on an Instagram profile dedicated to her, expressing frustration with the Gunung Rinjani National Park search and rescue team. They suggested that she might have survived if the response had been faster or more thorough.

“Juliana suffered great negligence on the part of the rescue team,” the family wrote, as translated by People via Black Enterprise. “If the team had reached her within the estimated time of 7 hours, Juliana would still be alive.”

They concluded: “Juliana deserved much more! Now we are going to seek justice for her because that is what she deserves! Don’t give up on Juliana!”

Rescue Delays and Dangerous Conditions

Drone footage captured shortly after the fall showed Marins still moving, giving her family hope that she could be rescued. However, worsening weather delayed the search. By the time rescuers returned to her location, she had fallen nearly 1,600 feet further into the volcano’s crater.

“Two rescue personnel were deployed to reach the victim’s location and check the second anchor point at a depth of 350m (1,140 ft),” the national park’s Facebook page stated on June 23, as reported by People. “However, after observation, two large overhangs were found before reaching the victim, making it impossible to install the anchor. The rescue team had to climb to reach the victim.”

By the time additional drones were used, Marins had become unresponsive. Her body was recovered four days later, and her relatives confirmed her death. Indonesian authorities have not yet released the official cause of death.
