An upstate New York family is celebrating after welcoming a newborn who has already made hospital history. Terrica and Shawn were stunned when their son, Shawn Jr., arrived on Jan. 31 at Cayuga Medical Center weighing an astonishing 13 pounds—nearly double the size of an average newborn. The hospital confirmed it’s the largest baby ever born at their Ithaca facility.
“We knew he’d be bigger, but this was beyond our expectations,” said Terrica, a mom of four. “He’s already fitting into 3 to 6 month diapers and clothes—it feels like we skipped straight to having a three-month-old.”
The hospital shared a heartwarming photo on Facebook showing Shawn Jr. alongside Margot, a tiny 4-pound baby born the same day to Chloe and Victor. Chloe said that seeing Shawn’s record-breaking size made welcoming her own little one “even sweeter.”

“It was really charming and such a wonderful reminder that babies come in all shapes and sizes,” Chloe said, expressing gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and hospital staff for their care.
Robyn Torgalski, System Director of Maternal Child Health at Centralus Health, praised both families: “These two births highlight that every baby and every birth story is unique. Whether a newborn weighs four pounds or thirteen, our teams are prepared to provide the highest level of care for both baby and family.”
The hospital emphasized the importance of celebrating every birth and providing exceptional care, noting that Cayuga Health is proud to support families during these unforgettable moments.
For perspective, the heaviest baby ever recorded weighed 22 pounds and was born in Italy in 1955, according to Guinness World Records.
