Inside the messy love nest where Mexican drug lord ‘El Mencho’ spent his final days
The lavish — yet chaotic — hideout where powerful drug lord Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes spent his last days was strewn with takeout containers and a mountain of medication, including pills for insomnia.
The Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader had been lying low at a two-story villa within the exclusive, gated Tapalpa Country Club, staying with one of his lovers. Judging by the state of the home, they rarely ventured outside.
Photos obtained by Reuters show the kitchen in total disarray: counters were covered with takeout boxes, rotten strawberries, milk cartons, and water bottles. Potatoes and tomatoes were scattered across the floor, while the fridge was stuffed with beverages alongside fruits and vegetables.

Oseguera was killed in an ambush behind the villa by Mexican military special forces, an operation that sent shockwaves through the country. Officials said intelligence agencies tracked him after identifying one of his mistresses living at the secluded compound.
Despite the mess, the villa itself was spacious and modern, featuring wide windows and minimalist décor. Cabinets, like the fridge, were crammed with medications for migraines, insomnia, acid reflux, and fungal infections. Vials of Tationil Plus, a supplement meant to boost cellular health, were stored near a detailed dosage schedule in the freezer. Grooming products were kept in plastic bags.

Religious items also lined the home, including Catholic saint figurines of the Virgin of Guadalupe and Saint Jude Thaddeus, displayed on a makeshift altar. A Bible passage encouraging trust in God was handwritten on a sheet of paper.
Only a few clothes were neatly arranged; most beds were unmade. The villa, with stone walls and a red-tiled roof, sits in Tapalpa, a town known for its ecotourism and weekend homes near a golf course and lake. Oseguera’s quiet retreat ended when authorities stormed the compound and fired on him as he attempted to flee through the back garden.
Mexico’s Defense Secretary Ricardo Trevilla said agents tracked the cartel leader after identifying a man close to Oseguera’s girlfriend, eventually locating him at the mountainside property.
El Mencho’s violent death has sparked a wave of cartel-related unrest nationwide, with the CJNG reportedly declaring war on President Claudia Sheinbaum.
