Trump honors mother of Ukrainian woman killed on North Carolina train in State of the Union
Anna, who sat next to Erika Kirk, was visibly emotional as President Trump spoke about her daughter.
“Iryna was riding home on the train when a deranged individual, who had been arrested over a dozen times and released through no-cash bail, stood up and viciously slashed her with a knife,” President Trump said. “No one will ever forget the look of terror on Iryna’s face in the final moments of her life.”

Iryna’s accused killer, DeCarlos Brown Jr., had a history of multiple arrests and charges prior to the attack, and had been released several times despite his record. He now faces murder charges and additional federal crimes connected to her death.
Surveillance footage reportedly showed what appeared to be an unprovoked attack. “She had escaped a brutal war only to be killed by a hardened criminal set free to commit violence in America,” President Trump continued. “Ms. Zarutska, tonight I promise you we will secure justice for your remarkable daughter.”
As President Trump finished, Anna rose to her feet, tears streaming down her face. The room erupted in applause, though Democrats remained seated.
“How do you not stand? How do you not stand?” President Trump asked twice, calling attention to their lack of response.
