The Department of Homeland Security said that some Democratic lawmakers plan to bring immigrants affected by enforcement actions as their guests to tonight’s State of the Union address in Washington.

By tradition, each member of Congress may invite at least one guest to attend the annual speech.

In a post on X, DHS wrote that some Democrats were planning to bring individuals it described as “illegal aliens” to the address, adding that the move showed they were prioritizing non-citizens over the safety of Americans. The department did not identify specific lawmakers or guests.

According to reporting, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer will bring Raiza Contreras, whose son Dylan Lopez Contreras was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement last year. Schumer has said Dylan entered the United States legally and complied with immigration requirements before his arrest.

“I am proud to bring Raiza as my personal guest to the State of the Union to show how ICE is hurting families and terrorizing communities across America,” Schumer said in a statement. “Dylan deserves to be home with his mom and in the community that loves him. We must rein in ICE.”

Homeland Security officials have described the 20-year-old as being in the country unlawfully, while supporters argue his case highlights problems in the immigration system.

Representative Ilhan Omar also said she would bring several guests who say they have been affected by immigration enforcement policies under President Donald Trump.

The president will also host invited guests for the address. Among those expected to attend are members of the U.S. men’s hockey team and other Americans recognized by the White House for service and achievement.
