Meridian, Idaho — A suspect allegedly stole an ambulance, filled it with gas cans, and attempted to ram it into a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) office in Meridian, Idaho, in what authorities are investigating as a potential arson attempt.

Meridian Police Chief Tracy Basterrechea said the ambulance was taken from St. Luke’s West Hospital late Wednesday and that the suspect poured accelerants inside the vehicle.

“We want to emphasize that this was a serious criminal act,” Chief Basterrechea said. “The theft and destruction of an emergency vehicle not only created a risk to responding personnel but also temporarily removed a critical medical resource from the community.”

The police chief added that the attack follows heightened rhetoric surrounding the DHS leasing office at the location. “Comments on social media claiming ‘property damage isn’t violence’ are absolutely false,” he said. “This was an act of violence, and if the suspect had not been interrupted, there is no doubt this building would have been burned, putting the lives of first responders and others at risk.”

According to Fox News, the incident occurred just after 11 p.m. on Wednesday. After stealing the ambulance from the hospital bay, the suspect drove through the parking lot to retrieve staged gas cans from nearby vegetation. The ambulance was then driven directly into the North Portico building, where DHS offices are located.

Authorities believe the suspect intended to ignite the accelerant, but was scared off before any fire could start. The suspect remains unidentified and at large.

State and federal authorities are actively investigating the incident.
