Man dines at New Jersey restaurant. Then he gets an email from CapitalOne revealing server added $100 tip: ‘Amex said you never tip this can’t be you’

Most people have gone out to eat and ended up spending more than expected. Usually, that’s because they didn’t pay close attention to prices—or they enjoyed a few extra drinks and appetizers. But in some cases, diners say unexpected charges can come from mistakes or even misconduct at the restaurant itself.
That’s what one man claims happened to him at a New Jersey waterfront restaurant. TikTok user Omar (@theworldvsomar) says a server added more than $100 to his tip after he left—and he only discovered it because his credit card company flagged the charge.
Customer says tip was increased after he left
In a viral video with over 693,000 views, Omar explains what he believes occurred.
“Today’s word of the day is ‘audacity’—like how this waiter had the audacity to look at my check after I leave and add $107 to the tip,” he says.
Behind him, viewers can see an email from Capital One asking him to confirm whether he intended to leave a 39% tip at Blu on the Hudson. His original bill was $274.02, and the added tip brought the total to $381.02.
“They must [have] thought I was rich,” he joked in the caption.
Could adding a tip be illegal?
Yes—depending on how it was done. Under New Jersey law, altering a signed receipt or processing an unauthorized charge could violate fraud or theft statutes.
If someone notices an incorrect tip on their statement—or receives a fraud alert like Omar did—experts recommend disputing the transaction with the card issuer first. Customers can also contact the restaurant directly. In many reported cases, businesses resolve the issue with refunds or account credits.
Others say it’s happened to them too
Commenters on TikTok shared similar experiences.
“The Cheesecake Factory did the same to me,” one person wrote. “That’s why I lock my card now.”
Another said, “This happened to me… I ended up getting the whole check for free.”
Several users offered prevention tips:
-
Write the dollar sign before the tip amount so it can’t be altered
-
Take a photo of the signed receipt before leaving
-
Review statements or enable card alerts for unusual charges
