Mystery grips slay case against Jill Biden’s ex-hubby
The murder case involving Jill Biden’s ex-husband remains enveloped in mystery, with little known about the motive or even the exact cause of death of his alleged victim, his second wife.
William “Bill” Stevenson, 77, a well-known former bar owner who was married to Jill Biden in the 1970s, appeared briefly via video Tuesday in New Castle County Superior Court in Delaware. He pleaded not guilty to charges accusing him of killing his wife, Linda Stevenson, in December. Speaking from the jail where he is held on $500,000 bail, he simply said, “Thank you, Your Honor,” after the judge outlined court procedures and informed him that his case would be handled by a different judge, according to People magazine.
At the end of the short hearing, a correction officer informed Stevenson that the session was over.
“OK, cool,” he replied. Stevenson is the former owner of the nationally known Stone Balloon bar and event space in Newark, Delaware, near the University of Delaware campus. His public defender entered the not-guilty plea on his behalf and requested a speedy trial. The lawyer did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Few details have emerged about Linda Stevenson’s death since Bill’s arrest more than two weeks ago, including how she died or what may have prompted the alleged crime. Police were called to the couple’s Elsmere home on December 28 after a domestic-dispute report and found Linda unresponsive on the living room floor. Bill was not arrested immediately; authorities conducted a weeks-long investigation before charging him.
Currently, only a one-sentence indictment alleging first-degree murder has been released publicly. Stevenson is scheduled to return to court on March 16.

Linda’s daughter, Christine Vettori, criticized Stevenson on social media following his arrest, writing, “He killed my mother and justice will be served. He’s going to need all the prayers he can get from prison.”
In a separate post, Vettori described the emotional toll of losing her mother. “The pain of losing her is paralyzing and the emptiness in my heart is an abyss,” she wrote. “Most days I can barely breathe.”
Jill and Bill Biden were married from 1970 to 1975. Jill Biden has not publicly commented on the allegations.

Bill has claimed he introduced Jill to President Joe Biden in 1972 and suggested she had an affair with him sometime after his first Senate campaign. The Bidens, however, maintain they met on a blind date in 1975 after Jill’s divorce from Bill and after Joe Biden’s first wife, Neilia, and their daughter died in a car accident.
