An Oregon man is accused of stabbing a woman after she resisted his alleged sexual assault, then driving her to a pharmacy because he believed she would buy supplies to treat her injuries.

Daniel Ray Myers, 62, has been arrested on charges including attempted second-degree murder, the Salem Police Department said. He had been the subject of a multistate search following the attack last week.

Police said that around 9 p.m. on Feb. 10, Myers and the woman were sitting in his car making online food-delivery orders when he drove her to a secluded area in West Salem. The woman told investigators he tried to sexually assault her and stabbed her several times when she fought back.

Authorities said she attempted to escape, but Myers kept her inside the vehicle. He reportedly released her only after she persuaded him to let her enter a nearby Walgreens in Keizer to get first-aid supplies. Store employees contacted police while she was inside.

Officers arrived and took the injured woman to a hospital. By then, Myers had fled in a silver Honda Civic, prompting a public alert to help locate him.

Two days later, investigators received tips that the car had been seen in California heading south toward Bakersfield, roughly 800 miles from Oregon. Detectives coordinated with the California Highway Patrol, which detained the suspect.

Police said Myers will be extradited back to Oregon to face the charges. Sgt. Jonathan Hardy told KPTV that the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening and she has since been released from the hospital.

“It appears she did everything that she should have done,” Hardy said. “When her life and safety were threatened, she fought back, then shifted to negotiating to get him to a point where she could get out of the car.”
