Authorities searching for kidnapping victim Nancy Guthrie are expanding their investigation into Mexico, with the Federal Bureau of Investigation coordinating with federal officials in Mexico, according to reporting by TMZ. Investigators say there are still no confirmed leads, but they consider it possible Guthrie was moved across the border sometime after the abduction. Reviews of Border Patrol camera footage and electronic records have not yielded evidence of a crossing.
A newly received ransom email, described as technically sophisticated, demands a payment similar to the earlier $6 million request but uses a different cryptocurrency and account. The message includes explicit threats if payment is not made. The outlet says it has passed the email to federal investigators and is withholding further details.
Officials are also warning that anyone attempting to exploit the situation by sending fraudulent ransom demands faces serious federal charges and lengthy prison sentences.
Elsewhere in the investigation, agents report no progress from inquiries with gun retailers. Authorities previously circulated a list of individuals who had purchased a holster matching the one seen on the abductor and asked stores in the Tucson area to check recent firearm sales—without success. A separate FBI team is reviewing purchase records with Walmart and other retailers for clothing or gear linked to the suspect, but that effort has not produced breakthroughs either.
As one law-enforcement source put it, investigators are “shaking the trees” in hopes of generating new leads.
