The search for Nancy Guthrie has now stretched beyond two weeks.

Authorities in Arizona, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, have been working continuously to locate the missing mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of NBC’s Today. Investigators say they still have not identified a suspect in the case.

On Monday afternoon, Donald Trump commented on the investigation during an interview with The New York Post, issuing a stark warning to those responsible for the abduction.

Trump said the kidnappers must return Nancy Guthrie alive without delay and indicated that, if she were killed, he would want the U.S. Department of Justice to pursue the death penalty. He added that anyone involved would face “very, very severe — the most severe” federal consequences if she is found dead after being taken from her home outside Tucson on Feb. 1.

Asked whether that meant federal prosecutors would seek capital punishment, Trump replied, “The most, yeah — that’s true.”

Last Friday, Trump also addressed questions about why the Pima County Sheriff’s Department remains the lead agency rather than federal authorities. “They didn’t want to let go of it, which is fine,” he said. “It’s up to them. It’s really up to the communities.”

Despite the absence of a named suspect, officials overseeing the investigation say they are beginning to make progress.
