A home invasion and assault in a Greenville neighborhood early Wednesday morning has left one man hospitalized and two suspects in custody, according to local authorities.
Investigators with the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office say 21-year-old Zaid Mayen and 20-year-old Jonathan David Garcia Larios were arrested in connection with the attack at a residence on Louis Street.
Arrest warrants charge the men with first-degree sexual offense, first-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and first-degree burglary. Authorities allege the suspects forcibly entered the home with the intent to assault the victim.
According to reporting by The Reflector, investigators say the victim was restrained, injured with an edged weapon, and sexually assaulted him in what authorities are calling a targeted attack. Emergency responders transported the man to ECU Health Medical Center for treatment. Officials have not released details about his condition.
Sgt. Lee Darnell described the case as “complex and evolving,” adding that detectives believe the incident was targeted rather than random.
Authorities said the Louis Street property is a private residence that also hosts short-term guests through Airbnb. It is not known whether anyone else was present at the time. Investigators say the incident appears isolated and that all leads are being pursued.
Garcia Larios was initially held at the Franklin County Detention Center. Jail records list him as homeless with ties to Franklinton and an additional address in Virginia Beach. Mayen, identified as being from Chapel Hill, was booked into the Orange County Detention Center without bond.
Officials confirmed both suspects are in the United States without legal status. The sheriff’s office said it has notified the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and both men are now subject to detainers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The investigation remains ongoing.
