DETROIT (FOX 2) — Detroit’s police chief says he intends to fire two officers who contacted U.S. Customs and Border Protection during traffic stops, saying the actions violated department policy and led to improper detentions.
Todd Bettison said the officers are currently suspended while he seeks approval from the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners to terminate their employment.
Rashida Tlaib backed the proposed firings, saying the move is necessary to maintain community trust in law enforcement.
“The Detroit Police Department has nothing to do with immigration enforcement,” said Mary Waters. “That is not their job. Targeting someone because of an accent is biased policing, and we will not tolerate that behavior against Detroit residents.”
Retired assistant chief Steve Dolunt agreed the officers’ actions broke policy but noted that more serious misconduct in the department has not always resulted in termination.
A spokesperson for Mary Sheffield said the administration will reaffirm the longstanding policy that the Detroit Police Department does not participate in federal immigration enforcement.
