A surveillance video released Thursday by KMBC appears to show a woman setting fire to a warehouse earlier this week in Kansas City, amid ongoing tensions and protests connected to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In the footage, the woman is seen throwing what looks like an improvised incendiary device through an opening before igniting a match. Flames begin to grow as she steps back, then returns with a liquid accelerant, pouring it onto the fire to intensify the blaze. She is later seen spreading more of the substance around the exterior before leaving the area. Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect, and the timeline of the firefighting response has not been detailed.

According to KMBC, the building is owned by Platform Ventures and had recently been the subject of public speculation that it might be sold for use as a federal immigration detention facility. Rumors about the site’s potential use began circulating in January.

On the same day the arson occurred, Platform Ventures announced it would not proceed with any sale of the property to the federal government. The company said in a Feb. 12 statement that it had been responding to what it described as “baseless speculation, inaccurate narratives and serious threats toward leadership.” The statement clarified that Platform Ventures was “not actively engaged with the U.S. Government or any other prospective purchaser” regarding the I-49 Industrial Center property.

Meeting documents from Port KC in late January had indicated the agency was aware of plans by Platform Ventures to sell the site to the federal government. Port KC later voted to end its relationship with the company, while noting it had no authority over or involvement in any potential property sale.

Quinton Lucas also released a statement addressing the situation after the rumors spread. He referenced reports that the warehouse could be converted into a large detention facility and said his office would continue legal and legislative efforts, along with community engagement, to prevent such a conversion in Kansas City or nearby areas.
