Steak ‘n Shake is saying goodbye to the microwave, USA Today reports. The burger-and-shake chain announced that every location will remove microwaves by April 15 as part of a push to make its food taste better and rely solely on “traditional methods,” according to a social media post on Thursday. “Quality restaurants don’t need microwaves,” the Indianapolis-based chain declared, adding, “Eat Real Food.”
Some customers have questioned why microwaves were in use at all, given that Steak ‘n Shake’s menu focuses on burgers, fries, and milkshakes, the Independent notes.
The move is part of a broader series of changes linked to health and quality since the chain aligned with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) campaign.
Other recent updates include switching from seed oils to beef tallow for frying—a longtime recommendation of Kennedy—and offering Coca-Cola with cane sugar in glass bottles. The company said these changes are part of its ongoing “MAHA journey.” Kennedy praised Steak ‘n Shake, which operates 390 U.S. locations according to Fox News, for showing “leadership in the crusade to Make America Healthy Again.”
Not everyone is convinced, however. Registered dietitian Kristina Cooke told USA Today she would not recommend replacing seed oils with beef tallow, citing its saturated fat content and potential links to higher cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular issues.
