Goldman Sachs’ top lawyer is set to step down after newly released records suggested a closer relationship with Jeffrey Epstein than she and the bank had previously acknowledged, according to reporting by the New York Times.

Kathryn Ruemmler, general counsel of Goldman Sachs since 2021 and a member of its reputational risk committee, said Thursday night that she will resign effective June 30. Her decision follows the Justice Department’s release of emails, text messages, and photographs detailing her interactions with the late financier and convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein. Ruemmler and Goldman had previously maintained that her contact with Epstein was strictly professional.

The newly disclosed materials, released late last month, appear to show a more personal dynamic. Reports from CNBC and The Guardian said the documents indicate Ruemmler allegedly requested and accepted gifts from Epstein, including designer items and spa visits, and offered him advice on managing negative media coverage. The records also include personal exchanges about her life, including her dating experiences. In one message cited in the documents, she reportedly referred to Epstein as “Uncle Jeffrey” in communication with an associate. According to the New York Post, she signed some emails to Epstein with “xoxo,” and allegedly continued corresponding with him until shortly before his death in jail. The Wall Street Journal reported that Ruemmler was one of three people Epstein called on the night he was arrested in 2019.

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon said in a statement that he had accepted Ruemmler’s resignation and “respected her decision.” Before joining Goldman, Ruemmler served as White House counsel under Barack Obama and later worked as a white-collar defense lawyer at Latham & Watkins. A Goldman spokesperson said Ruemmler “regrets ever knowing” Epstein.
