The search for Nancy Guthrie’s abductor has taken a more focused turn as federal investigators refine their suspect description and increase the reward for information. The FBI announced Thursday that it is now offering $100,000 for tips that lead to Guthrie’s whereabouts or to an arrest in the case.
Investigators say newly enhanced footage from the doorbell camera at Guthrie’s Tucson home shows a man believed to be connected to her disappearance. The individual appears to be about 5-foot-9 with an average build and carrying a black “Ozark Trail Hiker Pack” backpack. The video shows a masked, gloved person appearing to avoid the camera while armed and attempting to disable it, according to FBI Director Kash Patel.
Guthrie, 84, was reported missing on Feb. 1 after family members dropped her off at her home the night before. Authorities quickly determined she likely did not leave voluntarily, citing serious health conditions, her reliance on daily medication, and blood found on the porch that matched her DNA. Her doorbell camera had been disabled. Investigators have recovered multiple gloves in the area, though it remains unclear whether any are believed to have been worn by the suspect.
The case has drawn nationwide attention in part because Guthrie is the mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, who has made repeated public appeals for her mother’s safe return. The widespread attention has also led to online speculation and false leads, including bogus ransom notes. FBI officials say one person has been arrested in connection with a fake ransom demand.
In a recent social media video, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings addressed anyone who may be holding their mother, saying the family is willing to communicate but needs proof that she is alive. Authorities are urging neighbors in the area to review and share any surveillance footage of suspicious people or vehicles dating back to the beginning of the year.
