New Forensic Examination Finds That Nirvana Frontman Kurt Cobain’s Death Was NOT a Suicide, but MURDER
Cobain was killed, says a new peer-reviewed paper in the International Journal of Forensic Science.
In 1994, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home from what authorities ruled at the time to be a self-inflicted shotgun wound. The King County Medical Examiner officially classified the death as a suicide.
More than three decades later, a new private forensic review is challenging that conclusion.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, an independent team of forensic specialists recently reexamined Cobain’s autopsy and crime scene materials. The team included Brian Burnett, a forensic expert who has previously worked on cases involving drug overdoses followed by gunshot trauma.
Independent researcher Michelle Wilkins, who collaborated with the group, told the outlet that after several days reviewing the evidence, Burnett concluded that the case warranted further scrutiny. The team later published a peer-reviewed paper outlining ten points they believe raise questions about the original findings.

Among their claims, the researchers argue that certain autopsy details — including signs of organ damage — could be more consistent with oxygen deprivation from a heroin overdose than an immediate death from a shotgun blast. They suggest the possibility that Cobain may have been incapacitated before the fatal shot was fired and that the scene may have been staged to resemble a suicide.
Despite these assertions, the Seattle Police Department said there is currently no new evidence that would justify reopening the investigation.
Kurt Cobain didn’t kill himself.
Forensics now say: no blood, overkill heroin, arranged scene. Homicide.
His Nirvana publishing rights? Worth over $250M.
If he divorced Courtney, she’d lose it all.
But if he died married to her? She gets everything. pic.twitter.com/RtPW1S7iV0— Desiree (@DesireeAmerica4) February 10, 2026
🚨🇺🇸 NEW FORENSIC ANALYSIS CLAIMS KURT COBAIN’S 1994 DEATH WAS HOMICIDE, NOT SUICIDE

Questions surrounding Cobain’s death are not new. In 1998, the documentary Kurt & Courtney featured commentary from Courtney Love’s father, Hank Harrison, who expressed his personal belief that his daughter had been involved in a conspiracy related to Cobain’s death. The film also included claims from musician Eldon “El Duce” Hoke, who alleged that he had once been offered money to carry out the killing and make it appear as a suicide. Hoke reportedly passed a polygraph test regarding his claim, though polygraph results are not considered reliable evidence in court.
Hoke died shortly after being interviewed for the documentary, after being struck by a freight train in Riverside, California.
While these claims have fueled ongoing speculation for years, law enforcement officials maintain that the original ruling of suicide remains unchanged.
