A 34-year-old father of two was found dead inside a trash compactor on Feb. 4 behind a CVS store in Shaker Heights, Ohio, after his wife became concerned when she could not reach him and used a phone-tracking app to locate him, according to police.
Andrew Strand had been performing contract work at the CVS location, his wife told authorities, WOIO reported, citing Shaker Heights Police Commander John Cole. Police received a call from Strand’s wife shortly before 10 p.m. reporting that she was worried because her husband had not returned her calls.
She told officers she had traced his phone to the CVS where he was working. Responding officers searched the property and discovered Strand’s body inside a trash compactor at the rear of the store, police said.
“We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” Cole said, adding that investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
CVS said it is cooperating with the investigation. “We’re cooperating with police as they investigate the death of a contractor outside our Chagrin Blvd store,” the company said in a statement.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating the cause and manner of Strand’s death, according to police.
Strand was a mechanic who had recently started his own business and had been married to his wife, Jaymie, for seven years, according to the New York Post. The couple had a son and a daughter. A GoFundMe page created by a friend describes him as a devoted father who coached his son’s hockey and baseball teams and supported his daughter’s dance and gymnastics activities. The fundraiser had raised more than $22,000 as of publication.
