Britney Spears has cashed in on the hits that made her a pop icon. Multiple outlets, including Rolling Stone, People, and TMZ, report—citing unnamed sources—that Spears has sold her ownership stake in her full music catalog to publishing giant Primary Wave. The deal includes classics like “…Baby One More Time,” “Oops!… I Did It Again,” and “I’m a Slave 4 U.” According to sources, the agreement was finalized on December 30. While the financial details haven’t been publicly disclosed, one source suggests the payout could be comparable to Justin Bieber’s roughly $200 million back catalog sale in 2023. Representatives for Spears and Primary Wave have not commented.
Primary Wave has been steadily building a roster of major artists, having previously acquired rights to the estates of Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, Prince, and the Notorious B.I.G., along with Stevie Nicks’ publishing catalog. These types of deals often give artists a significant upfront payout while relieving them of managing their own rights.
Spears, who emerged from a 13-year conservatorship in 2021 and hasn’t released a studio album since 2016’s Glory, has said she won’t tour the U.S. again but hasn’t ruled out releasing new music. She has recently appeared on tracks with Elton John and will.i.am. Sources told TMZ that Spears is pleased with the Primary Wave agreement and has been celebrating with her children.
