GOP Lawmaker Calls on FCC to Take Action After Bad Bunny’s Shocking and Vulgar Halftime Show Lyrics are Translated to English
At least one Republican lawmaker is calling on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to review the content of Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance after Spanish lyrics from the show were translated into English.
During Sunday night’s Super Bowl halftime show, Bad Bunny performed for a national television audience. Following the performance, some viewers and commentators raised concerns about portions of the show they viewed as inappropriate for a live broadcast, including certain lyrics and choreography.
Representative Randy Fine (R-FL) publicly criticized the performance and announced that he is urging the FCC to take action. Fine said he believes elements of the show may have violated broadcast standards and called for potential fines and a review of broadcast licenses related to the event.
In a statement, Rep. Fine said:
“You can’t say the f-word on live TV. Bad Bunny’s halftime show was illegal. Had these lyrics — and other explicit content — been performed in English on live television, the broadcast would likely have been stopped and the fines would have been enormous. Puerto Ricans are Americans and we all live by the same rules. We are sending a letter to FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr calling for serious action, including fines and broadcast license reviews, against the NFL, NBC, and Bad Bunny.”
The FCC has not yet announced whether it will review the performance or take any action.
