Russian authorities said Sunday they have a suspect in custody in connection with the shooting of a senior intelligence officer, after he was arrested in Dubai and extradited to Russia. The Federal Security Service identified the suspect as Lyubomir Korba, a 63-year-old Russian citizen, according to the Guardian.
Korba is accused of shooting Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alekseyev, 64, the deputy head of Russia’s military intelligence agency GRU, in a Moscow apartment block on Friday using a silenced Makarov pistol. Alekseyev is in critical condition but expected to survive, a source told reporters.
Russia’s TASS news agency reported that another man was arrested in Moscow, while a woman described by officials as an accomplice fled to Ukraine, according to Deutsche Welle. Russian and UAE authorities have blamed Ukrainian intelligence for the attack, per the Guardian, though Kyiv denies involvement and suggested the ambush may be linked to internal Russian power struggles.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the shooting a “terrorist attack” intended to disrupt peace talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the US. Alekseyev, who has been sanctioned by both the US under President Trump and the UK for election interference and the Salisbury nerve agent poisoning, has long been a key figure in Russian covert operations.
