At Thursday’s National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, President Trump mixed faith and politics in wide-ranging remarks that included sharp criticism of a fellow Republican, according to multiple reports.
During his speech at the annual bipartisan event, President Trump singled out Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, calling him a “moron” and saying Massie is a guaranteed “no” vote on his legislative priorities. “If we did welfare reform, if we did the greatest thing in the history for religion, no matter what we did, no matter how good it is,” Trump said, “no matter what we do, this moron, no matter what it is.”
Massie has become one of Trump’s most outspoken critics within the GOP. The two have clashed repeatedly since Trump returned to office. Massie has pushed for the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein and voted against the Republican-backed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” last summer. President Trump has since endorsed Massie’s primary challenger, retired Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein, whom he encouraged to enter the race.
The president’s speech touched on a range of topics. At one point, he reflected on faith and the afterlife, saying, “I really think I probably should make it. I mean, I’m not a perfect candidate, but I did a hell of a lot of good for perfect people.”
In other comments, Trump addressed claims that he uses the Justice Department to target political opponents, saying, “I don’t, but wouldn’t I have a right to?” He also repeated his assertion that “we won the popular vote by a lot” in 2016, though official results show he lost the national popular vote to Hillary Clinton. He questioned “how a person of faith can vote for a Democrat,” praised Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s handling of border security as “the strongest border in the history of our country,” and described El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele as “a great ally” who oversees “very strong prisons.”
