Woman’s FaceTime With Sister Abruptly Cuts Out. Janitors Discover Bag Full Of Body Parts Days Later

A janitor discovered the dismembered remains of a 39-year-old woman Sunday morning in the basement of a New York City public housing building, a day after her sister received a brief FaceTime call from her.
The remains were found shortly after 9:30 a.m. at The Borinquen Public Houses, according to ABC 7 Eyewitness News, which cited officials. Workers with the New York City Housing Authority noticed that a bag felt “suspiciously heavy.” When they opened it, they found human remains. A law enforcement official later told The New York Times that the plastic bag had been placed inside a trash compactor.
Authorities identified the victim Monday as Michelle Montgomery. The Office of the New York City Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy and said it will review additional test results and investigative information from law enforcement before determining her cause of death. Montgomery lived at the Gowanus Houses, a different public housing development from where her remains were discovered, according to The New York Times.
Anthony Echevarria, who identified himself as Montgomery’s spouse and the father of their four children, said he was struggling to process the loss.
“She was a loving mother of four,” he said. “I don’t know what I’m going to do next. Everything is spinning around at 100 miles an hour.”
Echevarria said he last saw his wife late Saturday when she left their home to spend time with friends. He said authorities had not provided details about how she died.
Montgomery’s sister, Serenity Montgomery, questioned who would want to harm her.
“My sister was a loving, happy person,” she said. “I don’t know what would make someone do this to her.”
“We’re just trying to get to the bottom of this. I’ve got so many questions,” she added.
Serenity said it was unusual not to hear from her sister over the weekend, as they typically checked in with each other before going out. She told The New York Times that Michelle called her on FaceTime around 10:00 p.m. Saturday. She heard music on the call before it abruptly disconnected and was unsure whether the call had been intentional.
Echevarria told News 12 that they would seek justice for Montgomery’s death. “I promise that,” he said.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains active, according to ABC 7.
The New York Police Department did not immediately comment.
