Texas Governor Abbott orders TEA investigation after Austin ISD students join nationwide walkout
AUSTIN, Texas — Governor Greg Abbott says he’s directing the Texas Education Agency commissioner to investigate after Austin ISD students took part in Friday’s nationwide walkout.
In a social media post, he says AISD gets taxpayer dollars to teach the subjects required by the state, not to help students skip school to protest.
Austin ISD let kids out of school, with a police escort, to protest ICE at the Capitol
Hundreds of students from McCallum High School in North Austin and Crockett High School in South Austin marched around their schools with signs covered in anti-ICE slogans.
“Those people mean something to us,” said Crockett High School student Joshua Garcia. “They mean something to this community. They mean something to this state; they mean something to the United States.”
Austin ISD leaders shared today that these protests were not sponsored by the district and that students who missed class were counted as absent or tardy.
