Shark Tank Star Faked Own Funeral for Her 70th Birthday

Barbara Corcoran didn’t just celebrate her 70th birthday—she staged her own funeral. The Shark Tank investor, now 76, recently told the Boardroom podcast that in April 2019, when she learned friends were planning a surprise party for her, she decided to up the ante, according to E! Online.

While guests were upstairs preparing at her New York duplex, Corcoran’s brother announced her arrival and guided them into the living room—where they were met with a full-on funeral setup. Corcoran lay “dead” in a coffin, surrounded by a room decked out like a proper funeral parlor, complete with clergy from multiple faiths.

Guests reportedly believed she had actually passed. Corcoran stayed perfectly still with her eyes closed as friends shared their thoughts about her life. The standout moment came from her then-9-year-old daughter, Katie, who asked bluntly, “When do we get the money?” Corcoran called the experience irresistible: “How many people do you know who hear what people say about them after they’re dead?”

After about 10 minutes, she sprang from the coffin and danced, later posting on Instagram that she emerged in a red Carolina Herrera gown to a Diana Ross song and performed the tango. The prank caused a stir—her building’s doorman told her the next day that social media was abuzz with rumors she had actually died.

Even now, Corcoran says she’s proud of the stunt. “I had the best party of the century, no doubt about it,” she told People.
