Teen gets stuck in drain pipe while sledding on Kansas golf course

A 15-year-old boy became trapped in an 11-inch-wide drain pipe while sledding on a Kansas golf course, authorities said.

The incident occurred at Sand Creek Station when the teen was sledding with a friend and fell feet-first into an uncovered pipe in the ground, according to the Newton Fire and EMS Division.

Emergency responders were called after the boy’s friend asked a neighbor to dial 911. When EMS arrived, they found the teen trapped in the pipe with only his fingertips visible at ground level. “Thanks to his quick thinking, this event had a positive outcome. It is important to always have someone with you while sledding to call for help in the event of an emergency,” the fire department said in a statement.

The boy was safely removed and transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

The unusual incident quickly drew skepticism online, with many questioning how a 15-year-old could fit into such a narrow pipe. In response, the Newton Fire and EMS Division clarified that the pipe’s interior diameter was indeed 11 inches, adding that “our priority was getting him out, not how he managed to get in.”

“It’s kind of mind-boggling how it even happened, to be honest,” a local resident told KWCH.

Authorities said the drain pipe should have had a metal grate covering it, which has since been replaced. “My reaction initially was there’s just no way a person could fit in it,” Sand Creek Station General Manager Dustin Housh told the outlet. “It seems to be kind of an incredible feat, and I’m curious how it happened.”
