A car crashed into the McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Friday night, startling travelers and airport employees as it smashed through glass doors and came to a stop inside the building.
The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. in Romulus, Michigan, according to WXYZ. Video from the scene showed a black sedan sitting inside the terminal near Delta Airlines work areas, surrounded by shattered glass and debris.
Authorities said the driver exited the vehicle immediately with his hands raised, appearing disoriented as security and airport officials rushed in. “The response was so quick, thank God, with the cops and TSA and everybody,” traveler Ali Khalifa told WXYZ. “That all happened in seconds.”
Footage circulating on social media showed the unidentified man, who was wearing a Detroit Lions jersey, yelling incoherently as he was taken into custody by multiple security officers.
Airport officials said the driver struck a ticket counter after driving through the terminal entrance. The Wayne County Airport Authority Police Department is investigating the crash, and the cause remains unknown.
Six people were treated at the scene, though Delta Airlines later confirmed to CBS News that no injuries were reported. The airline said three employees were struck by debris and evaluated by medical personnel. Delta operations were not affected.
Photos from the aftermath showed shattered glass doors and metal barricades positioned outside the terminal entrance. Officials said more information would be released as the investigation continues.
