Maybe we shouldn’t have stared, but … brushing your teeth in a fancy restaurant?
DEAR ABBY: My husband and I were enjoying dinner with friends at an upscale restaurant—excellent food, lively conversation, the whole experience. Midway through the meal, my husband leaned over and whispered, “She’s brushing her teeth.”
I looked to my left. At first, I assumed the woman at the neighboring table was discreetly using a toothpick. I was wrong. She was enthusiastically brushing with a full-sized toothbrush.
After about a minute, she tucked the toothbrush into a cosmetic bag, removed a denture case, and proceeded to insert and adjust her retainer—right there at the table.
We were speechless. In all my years, I’ve never witnessed such astonishing table manners. Perhaps we shouldn’t have stared, but it was one of those moments that leaves you frozen in disbelief. Abby, this restaurant has perfectly lovely restrooms. What on earth is happening to our society?
