California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said the governor was denied entry to a venue at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Jan. 21, despite being invited to speak, citing “pressure” from the Trump administration.
Newsom had been scheduled to participate in a discussion with Fortune at USA House Davos, a privately organized event held alongside the World Economic Forum. USA House has been recognized by the U.S. government as the nation’s official headquarters in Davos.
BREAKING: Under pressure from the White House and State Department, USA House (a church acting as the official US pavilion) is now denying entry to @CAGovernor Gavin Newsom to speak with media after Fortune — the official media partner — invited him to speak.

According to Politico, Newsom was also scheduled to speak at an event on Jan. 22, one day after President Trump’s address at the forum, but that appearance was later removed from the schedule. Messages obtained by Politico indicate that USA House leadership faced pressure from the U.S. Department of State.
When asked why Newsom was turned away, his office told the Los Angeles Times that the decision was made by the venue and was based on a choice not to “include an elected U.S. official” in the event’s programming.
The White House has not issued a statement regarding Newsom’s situation.
