A 29-year-old Wisconsin man has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of a woman found inside a Milwaukee motel room earlier this month.

Lance Devon White was taken into custody last week in connection with the killing of 29-year-old Alicia Machnik. According to court records, Milwaukee police responded to the Port Motel on Appleton Avenue around 2:38 p.m. on Jan. 14 after receiving a report of a deceased person. Emergency responders pronounced Machnik dead at the scene.

Investigators reported that Machnik was found lying on a bed with a single gunshot wound to her forehead. Evidence collected inside the motel room included White’s state identification card, birth certificate, debit card, and Social Security card.

A motel employee told police he had spoken with Machnik around 11:30 a.m. that day when she requested to extend her stay. When the employee returned to the room several hours later and received no answer, he entered using a master key and discovered her unresponsive. Surveillance footage showed White leaving the room at approximately 11:28 a.m., and no other individuals were seen entering or exiting the room afterward.

Machnik’s mother told investigators that her daughter had married White about a year earlier and that her behavior had significantly declined since then.

Police also spoke with a man who said he had been Machnik’s on-and-off boyfriend for several years and often helped her financially. He told officers he had access to her Uber account and noticed a ride was taken from the Port Motel to another motel about an hour after Machnik’s death. An employee at the second motel reported that a man matching White’s description attempted to rent a room later that afternoon but was turned away for lack of identification.

Authorities later located White at St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was arrested without incident.

During a post-Miranda interview, White told investigators he had been in a relationship with Machnik for about a year and admitted to shooting her. According to the probable cause affidavit, White claimed Machnik asked him to shoot her where his name was tattooed on her face and said he fled the scene afterward, discarding the weapon nearby.

White is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Wednesday.
